It was nine thirty-four Thursday evening when an Indiana State Police trooper spotted a John Deere tractor pulling a yard trailer on Fourth Street in Petersburg, Pike County. The agricultural vehicle had just disregarded a stop sign at State Road fifty-seven, catching the attention of law enforcement.
The trooper initiated a traffic stop, quickly discovering multiple violations. The trailer being pulled behind the green tractor was missing required taillights, creating a safety hazard on the darkened roadway. However, what happened next transformed a routine traffic violation into something far more serious.
When approached by the trooper, forty-year-old Joshua Brames allegedly displayed clear signs of impairment. Officers attempted to conduct standard field sobriety tests to determine his condition, but Brames refused to cooperate with the evaluation.
The situation escalated dramatically when Brames made an unexpected decision. Rather than comply with the investigation, he stepped down from the tractor cab and took off running on foot, leaving the John Deere behind as he fled from troopers.
Police eventually apprehended Brames, but his cooperation didn't improve. According to officials, he "continued to be uncooperative and refused to submit to a chemical test" even after being taken into custody.
The arrest report stated that "Brames displayed signs of impairment but refused field sobriety tests. Brames then stepped off the tractor and fled on foot."
Due to concerns about his condition, authorities made an additional stop before booking. Officials noted that "Due to his state of intoxication, he was transported to Daviess Community Hospital to be cleared by medical staff before being incarcerated."
Following medical clearance, Brames was transported to Pike County Jail facing charges of operating while intoxicated and resisting law enforcement.
