Welcome to Arrest Stories. A twenty-six-year-old murder suspect who was mistakenly released from jail has been recaptured at a Florence gas station after a multi-day manhunt. Here's what may have happened.
Anthony Sage was back behind bars after what officials are calling an unacceptable mistake that should never have occurred. The suspect, charged with second-degree murder and first-degree robbery in connection with a deadly shooting at a Gresham apartment complex, walked free from Multnomah County Detention Center on Monday, September twenty-second, despite a court order denying his bail.
The tragic case stems from the death of fifteen-year-old Lowgunn Ivey. According to police reports, Sage admitted to detectives that he was part of a plan to rob Ivey in what authorities describe as a gun and drug deal gone wrong. The shooting left one teenager dead and two others injured. During questioning, Sage reportedly told investigators "it was never supposed to go down like that."
The administrative error occurred when sheriff's office staff misinterpreted a court order. While an initial release document indicated bail had been set at five thousand dollars, court records clearly show the judge had denied bail entirely on September seventeenth. Officials stated "the state had met its burden of establishing the proof is evident and the presumption strong that Mr. Sage had committed the alleged acts."
After realizing their mistake, authorities launched an immediate search. US Marshals assisted in tracking down Sage, who was peacefully arrested at a gas station off Highway One-Oh-One in Florence. No force was used during the rearrest.
Sheriff officials acknowledged the gravity of their error, stating "Ty Sage should never have been able to post bail" and "To the family of Lowgunn Ivey, the young man killed, I want to acknowledge the fear and trauma that this mistaken release has caused." The victim's family expressed relief at the recapture, with one member saying "I feel a little bit of relief knowing he is back in custody."
Sage will now be held on a no-bail hold upon his return to jail.
