Welcome to Arrest Stories. A California fire captain stands accused of fatally shooting his domestic partner and her young son at his own home before fleeing nearly four hours away, where he was captured without resistance. Here's what may have happened.
Just after nine o'clock Thursday evening, deputies rushed to a residence on Oakwood Road in Cameron Park following reports of a shooting. What they discovered inside painted a horrific scene of domestic violence gone deadly.
Forty-seven-year-old Darin McFarlin, a fire captain with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection's Amador El Dorado unit, allegedly opened fire inside his own home. Deputies found an adult woman suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
A young boy, critically injured in the shooting, received immediate medical attention and was rushed to a local hospital. Tragically, medical teams could not save him, and he was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival. Authorities discovered another juvenile inside the home who was found safe and unharmed.
According to official statements, McFarlin and the adult victim were in a domestic relationship, though authorities have not specified whether they were married or dating. The shooting occurred near Oakwood and Chelsea roads in what neighbors described as a quiet residential area. Remarkably, nearby residents reported they never heard gunshots that evening.
One neighbor recalled seeing McFarlin waving hello that same morning, showing no signs of the violence that would unfold hours later.
After the shooting, McFarlin fled the scene. Deputies launched an intensive search, locating him just after midnight Friday in Mono County, nearly four hours from the crime scene. Officials confirmed the suspect did not resist arrest when taken into custody.
McFarlin was booked into jail early Friday morning at five-thirty and is being held without bail on two counts of homicide.
The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office issued a statement extending sincerest condolences to the family, friends, and community of the victims.
All suspects presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Do not take this report as factual, always verify facts. Thanks for watching Arrest Stories.
